A floor looks decent with a carpet on it. However, when putting carpets where they belong on the floor, carpet padding should never be ignored. That because carpet pads serve two purposes — they add a layer of cushion on your floor, and at the same time, offering good thermal insulation during cold season. Furthermore, a quality carpet pad will make your carpet live longer. So when considering your carpet padding options (as part of a home remodel project), it generally has to boil down on the quality, cost, as well as compatibility factors.
Six Carpet Padding Options
Density of your carpet padding
A good residential carpet padding has a density of between 6 and 8 pounds rating. Pads that are rated 6 pounds and below are generally suitable for use in commercial areas or in floors where carpets are replaced more frequently. Again, 6 pound rating offers softer cushioning than 8 pounds rating, so if you want a little bit of firmness and sturdiness, choose 8 pounds rating instead. Lastly, 8 pound density rating tends to be ideal in high-traffic areas since they last longer. It is also important to keep in mind that high-density padding eliminates chances of wrinkles forming on your carpet, plus they generally cost more.
Thickness & warranty
Your carpet padding should have the right thickness which meets your carpet manufacturer’s specifications. If not, you will void your carpet warranty. Again, most carpet pads tend to fall in the mark of 7/16 inches thick. Don’t go with pads that are too thick because these encourage the formation of wrinkles in or below carpets. Yet again, carpet padding that is too thick or thin reduces the lifespan of your carpet.
For a lightweight and cost-effective carpet padding option, go with urethane or polyurethane materials. In fact, polyurethane gives high density and lasts longer than its counterpart, urethane. Again, urethane compresses too quickly and doesn’t hold up better in high-traffic floors. So if you’re choosing urethane material, know that it is only recommended for carpets whose lifespan is limited to 3 years.
If you have looped or tight-weaved carpet, then you can choose synthetic padding instead. That’s because synthetic padding are high density and durable as well. Furthermore, the re-bound nature of synthetic material gives it an edge over other padding that can stand high-traffic areas. Synthetic padding is also ideal for looped carpet styles since they prevent wrinkling or folding of the carpet. Lastly, synthetic material is designed to resist moisture, mold and mildew, thus can be used in concrete floors.
Recycled material for padding
For a viable, environmentally-friendly and cost-effective option, padding made of recycled material is the best. They are known as rebond padding. They are made of a combination of recycled urethane foam and other materials, plus they come in a vast array of thickness and density.
This type of padding is the most common in retail stores since consumers find it affordable. So you can also choose it as a durable carpet padding which comes at the lowest price available.
Your carpet grade must match the grade of padding you’re aiming at. If you have a carpet that is designed to last for 10 years, it means you will have to go for a carpet padding that is also designed to last for 10 years or more.
The typical cost you will pay for a 6-8 pound density padding is about $3.50 to $5.50 per square feet. Rubber pads are a good option for residential areas. They do a good job in supporting your carpet for as long as the correct density and thickness is taken into account. On the other hand, rubber slab padding is used in commercial applications where concrete floors may be involved. Their density is usually measured in ounces.
